One of the great things about more modern and minimalist interior design is that just like minimal music it can provide the backdrop for many different styles from many different cultures. It tends not to clash with anything therefore it opens the door to everything.
Minimal spaces and functional furniture is brilliant as it gives a room a purpose and de-clutters the environment. The power of minimal and Bauhaus design is in subtraction and making sure not to over complicate things. If a simple object can fulfil a purpose why go overboard and complicate its task.
This paradigm certainly has weight and makes a lot of sense in many spaces. The slight drawback however is the fact that people usually want their living rooms and spaces to reflect, at least in part, some of their personality, which usually involves cultural influences that are unlikely to conform to minimal design principles.
When purchasing sofas it is helpful to think in one of two ways.
1. My sofa is going to act as a focal point for the room. If this is the case it must be positioned predominantly within the space and other furniture should be positioned in such a way so as not to draw attention from it. The sofa must not clash in colour with the rest of the rooms design and it is helpful to remember that other furniture must create contrast with the sofa. Keep the other furniture simple and have you sofa ornate, this contrast will draw attention to the sofa.
2. My sofa is going to compliment and blend in with my living space. If this is the case then it is important to look for themes in the living rooms design. These themes can then be drawn in to the sofa choice.
